Senator Caesar Trunzo (3rd Senate District, Brentwood) presented Oakdale, NY resident Donna M. Boyle, Executive Director of the Brookhaven Roe/East YMCA with a 2008 New York State Senate Woman of Distinction Award for her personal and professional contributions to her community.
"I am proud to honor Donna as a Woman of Distinction, and prouder still of the recognition she has earned from her neighbors, colleagues and friends," said Senator Trunzo. "Her selfless dedication and contagious positive outlook has resulted in making her community a better place to live. She is truly an inspiration for the entire community."
Eighteen years ago Donna Boyle was a stay-at-home mom, happily raising three busy sons. When her husband, Dennis, an NYPD police officer, was injured on the job, she reentered the workforce as a swim instructor/lifeguard at the Huntington YMCA.
When the Great South Bay YMCA in Bay Shore opened it’s doors in 1991, Donna worked as lead instructor and lifeguard before becoming the Aquatic Director in 1992, followed by Aquatics and membership Director, Director of Operations, and most recently, Executive Director of the Brookhaven Roe/East YMCA.
In the past seven years as the Director of the Brookhaven YMCAs, she considers herself fortunate to work with tremendously dedicated staff and Board teams, increasing membership by more than 65%. Under her direction, the number of swim lessons has tripled, senior citizens’ exercise and Teen Wellness programs have been added, and substantial facility improvements have been made.
Committed to serving her community, Ms. Boyle has also been active with the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, the Patchogue Grants committee and the Bellport and Holtsville/Farmingville Chambers of Commerce. Also a member of the Association of YMCA Professionals since 1994, Ms. Boyle was recently nominated to the YMCAs of New York State Board of Directors, representing the YMCA’s interests as they relate to public policy.
Donna's balanced and dedicated commitment to her community, family and career distinguishes her as an inspirational role model for women everywhere.
The Senate's "Woman of Distinction" program was created in 1998 to honor New York women who exemplify personal excellence, or whose professional achievements, acts of courage, selflessness, integrity or perseverance serve as an example to all New Yorkers.
